- Favourite moment since starting CrossFit?
Finally getting to the end of 16.5. I’d been doing CrossFit for about a month and about 7 thrusters in I was gassed! It ended up taking me about 38 minutes which was over double most other people’s times. I also really enjoyed the European Championship qualifiers we did as it encouraged me to try and RX all of the wods. Since then I’ve been RXing more of them than before.
I do like the OMEMs, especially the power cleans. My mobility is horrible, so being able to just wrestle the bar off the floor is heaven for me. Plus you get to rest a bit. “The Chief” is probably my favourite Hero wod! I love the simplicity and=, again, you get rest built in. I love to hate Fran. Thrusters are my nemesis, but I feel a sense of accomplishment when I do it and it reminds me how far I’ve come since 16.5.
-When did you start at CrossFit Aylesbury and why?
January 2016 I started. I had a few years gym experience - strength and bodybuilding type workouts, but was getting a little bored of training early mornings, on my own and I always avoided any type of cardio. I’d been tempted to try CrossFit for a while. I’d seen the slating it got regarding bad form and high injuries, but wanted to see if that was actually the case. One random Google search December 2015 threw up the CrossFit Aylesbury site and my interest was piqued. Came down and Owen kindly(!) gave me Fight Gone Bad as a trial wod. Wow I found it tough. Completely out of my comfort zone of low reps and long rest, but getting out of the comfort zone is what it’s about. I signed up and thought I’d give it a few months to see how it fares and over a year later I’m still here.
-What impact has CrossFit had on you since beginning?
Consistency and enjoyment from training. Feels like play time most of the time and I’m now at a stage where I enjoy getting up at 5am every morning. It really sets me up for the rest of the day. Before I’d train 3 times a week and used to look forward to the rest days, but now it’s the opposite where I look forward to Dawn Patrol.
-What are your future goals?
I’m 40 next year and I have 3 month old son so want to stay fit and active so I can run around the park with him in a few years time. I had a deadlifting back injury a few years ago, so I want to build my confidence and stay injury free doing those to a respectable weight. Improve my overhead mobility as it’s holding me back on a few lifts and just continue to enjoy everything about CrossFit - community, competitions, wods...
